Tinch Law Firm, P.C. is a business law practice based in the UMD Discovery District helping emerging and growth stage businesses protect ideas and brands.  We help founders, CTOs and creators turn ideas into patents, trademarks and copyrights.  We counsel clients on leveraging these assets to grow their brands, gain marketshare, and deliver value to investors. We counsel businesses on a range of more general business law matters including: transactional agreements like assignments and licenses; business law agreements like founder IP assignments, employment agreements, joint venture agreements, and more!

According to the SBA small businesses drive the US economy:

• Small businesses account for 44 percent of economic activity in the United States.
• Small businesses create two-thirds of new jobs and deliver 43.5 percent of the United States’  gross domestic product (GDP) - 20.94 TRILLION in 2020.
• Of high patenting companies, small businesses produce 16 more patents per employee than their larger counterparts.
• Small tech startups with fewer than 5 employees account for a large number of these patents.

• 36 percent of small businesses are owned by women.
• 9 percent are owned by veterans.
• 14.6 percent of small businesses are owned by people of color.  2.3 Million of whom are Latinx , 1.9 million Black, and 1.6 million Asian.

Our mission is to democratize intellectual property:

• Black inventors are vastly underrepresented in the patent system. One study found that from 1976 to 2008, African American inventors were awarded six patents per 1 million people, compared to 235 patents per 1 million for all U.S. inventors.
• One study found that Women and Hispanic and Black minorities combined made up just 20% of innovators.
• According to a USPTO report women comprise 12.8% of all inventor-grantees.
• In the history of the Fortune 500 list, first published in 1955, there have been only 19 Black CEOs out of 1,800 chiefs. Currently, 4 companies on the list are led by black chiefs.
• Black and Latinx people are underrepresented in startups. According to a study, 79.2% of startup executives were White, 15.6% Asian, 2.6% Latinx, 2.1% Black, and 0.5% Other.
• Just 3.45% of all attorneys are African American and 1.7% of all intellectual property attorneys are African American. Less than 1% of all patent attorneys is African American.
